DIY - Refinishing

You don't have to replace your dry, warped, twisted, and flaking deck or fence! In nearly all cases it just needs to be refinished. And for hundreds to thousands of dollars less than replacing it.

That doesn't mean just wipe a coat of stain across the planks and hope for the best.

The condition of the wood is important. Wood that has been weathered is dry, splintering, and an open invitation to insects. It also doesn't absorb well.

When we refinish, we sand the planks and posts to get down to the raw wood which absorbs the stain. We seal cracks and putty holes to keep moisture from getting inside. That way we know we're sealing and protecting the material and not putting lipstick on a pig.

It takes a long time but being meticulous adds years to the life of your fence or deck.

We color match to go with your house, your yard, your garden, or your car. And we double coat each surface to ensure the best-looking, longest-lasting finish. It should last you five to seven years before you need to think about refinishing again.

If you're going the DIY route, follow the steps above for the best results. Make sure to sand evenly, especially if you're coating with a transparent stain. That really picks up grain pattern but it also showcases flaws. Be sure to let each coat of stain dry completely. This ensures the best protection and the best look.

(If you try to roll or brush over a layer that is still setting you can pull up sections of drying paint or give it a stucco/stippled texture that looks amateur.)

We Don't Mess Around

We have always done things different here at Harwell Design. If you are doing the same thing everyone else is then you aren’t standing out and standing out is how we want our final product to look. One method in particular that we have used to save our customers the headache of a messy yard, is to pre stain the back of our wood before it arrives on site. This way the only staining that is done on site is the front boards. This method saves time and lowers the risk of spilling on project sites. Other companies wait until they are onsite to paint the back of the boards but this method is prone to spills and accidents. This is just one more way Harwell Design looks out for our customer.

Horizontal Style Fence

You have seen them everywhere. So what is the deal with all these fences being build horizontally? How come so many people are doing it? Well, from a design stance, it’s a much cleaner design and displays a simplistic look. We love the design because it displays a bold look that hasn’t been seen in a while. For a long time fences have been build one way. Not a lot of design revolution in the fencing world, so when the horizontal style came on the scene we were excited to embrace something new! This style is great for modern looking homes and can be done in all sorts of sizes and patterns. Here are some examples we have done in the past. We can’t wait to build more!

In the past few years we have seen front yard fences increase in popularity, which is really no surprise. Living in Southern California we all know how precious our privacy is and don’t want people walking through our yard. Whether it’s seeing some other dogs business on your lawn or suddenly missing some blooming flowers, people will think because it’s your front yard its a community garden. Building a front yard fence can be an easy way to keep unwanted attention out of your front yard! Other Fence Companies sometimes only build fences in the front up to 42 inches tall, however there is a loophole! Anything past 42 inches can be build so long as it is 50% visibility. So if you want shrubs, or a unique design from us, know that building a front yard fence over 42 inches is possible.

Our neighbors recently purchased a trampoline for their kids. Perhaps to burn off some extra energy during the summer. We Do More Than You Think!

Along with building fences and a gates for the residents of Los Angeles, we also build custom furniture. Everything from Planter boxes to Benches and Chairs, the creativity of our builders knows no bounds. Our owner, Arian Harwell grew up in New Mexico where at the young age of 12 he learned the trade of furniture building from his Father, Jake. To this day furniture building is a huge passion for both of them and the careful attention to detail is seen in all of their fences and gates. In the spare time they do have they enjoy pushing the boundaries and exploring new designs for functional furniture. Using Reclaimed Wood

Reclaimed wood has become extremely popular in the home design world. This great accent adds texture and great color to walls or furniture pieces. Working with fences we have been fortunate enough to tear out old fences. With this wood we have been able to sand and repurpose this wood, restoring it to something beautiful again. Not only do we work with this restored wood but we sell it as well at our warehouse and showroom.
