Refinish Instead Of Rebuild!

We pride ourselves in bringing ageing wood back to life. We always sand off old coats of paint or stain to give your boards new life and a chance to look brand new again! 



Our crew is trained in knowing how to sand correctly and using the right grit for the right wood type and density. A wood that is recommended to not stain at all is Ipe -a very dense wood that actually looks best if it is not stained to start with because it maintains its original look without the stain.  Unfortunately many designers do not know that and have clients choose stain colors.  Often, it causes an unwelcome problem to learn this lesson.  It can be done but the wood itself is already quite expensive and dealing with an inappropriate finish can cause a lengthy and labor intensive effort that doesn't improve the looks very much and that finish also does not maintain well, so the whole tedious process needs redone in a few years.  Helping our clients learn about the nature of a certain wood of interest helps our customers select their wood and designs for a lasting and fitting finish.

Modern Fencing In Los Angeles

Sleek, black and modern have always been in popular demand! We are happy to offer custom wall extensions, fencing and gates! This is a custom project with horizontal wall extensions to give more privacy in the front yard along with an entry gate. 

This gate was designed to fit around the existing stucco wall. It is a simple unique design that is subtle, yet handsome and works well with the exterior of the home!  

Looking Back At The Same Quality

I discovered a box of old pictures from our early days at Harwell Design this past weekend. They showed our team at work and the projects that shaped who we are now. I was looking through the pictures when I noticed a certain picture. It was a horizontal wall expansion job that we finished in Los Angeles years ago. It was the consistent quality of our work that was most noticeable, not only the craftsmanship.

Custom Fencing

We love to be challenged and give the client exactly what they are looking for. In this instance, we had a rather large tree that was placed right in the middle of a property line. Both neighbors loved the tree and the shade it provided so we thought of a way that it would leave both sides of their yards with a custom look and both of them happy, without a cut into anyone's property. Privacy Can Still Be Beautiful

Many of our clients ask for a fence or a wall topper to increase privacy of outdoor living spaces. Our focus is to build the fence that fulfills the idea our client already has in mind. Creative Custom Gates

We are always excited when we get a challenging design, especially one that a client is excited to build. It becomes a win/win situation of serving the clients' needs while having us grow individually as we widen our portfolio. With every design, whether fence or gate, we always love to collaborate and problem solve. This project in particular was looking for a way to have a wide opening without losing space. The solution? Layered sliding gates! By layering the gates on a track we were able to make the gate wide enough for the client to enjoy without eliminating space.

Working Together!

Working with great clients is another part of Harwell Design we enjoy. Sabrina was a rockstar client of ours that we were excited to work for, which is why we are ultra excited to show off her project. For a front yard fence we knew there would be some height limitations so we got together and came up with a solution. In Los Angeles, fences in the front yard can't be higher than 42 inches, but we can build taller as long as we build giving 50% visibility. We were going to install horizontal slats that gave a 50% gap, however Sabrina wanted to do something different and we loved that idea. Staggering the boards on top was the new design and one we are proud to show off! This is what happens when we listen to what the client wants. Combined with what we must do for a sturdy, and lasting structure...something truly and beautifully unique is the final result!

Reclaimed Wood Project!

       We are very excited to show off our new reclaimed wood option of fencing and gates at Harwell Design.  A recent project we did was a reclaimed Wall Extension with an entry gate to give some extra privacy for a back yard and also to enclose the yard with a fence for a new puppy to safely frolic in their yard! Using reclaimed wood is a little trickier than you might think. It takes a trained eye to select the right shades of reclaimed wood to use for blending tones or giving contrast for design purposes. You want a finished product to have an overall balanced look. Our resident artist and master wood worker Jake Harwell was the brains behind our wall extension. 4 Ways to Spruce Up Your Backyard For Summer!

Spring time is here! And that means outdoor summer parties are around the corner! If you’re going to entertain in your yard, you’re going to have to turn it into an awesome space that can accommodate your friends & family. Here are some backyard design ideas that can help you get started.

1. Install an updated fence

Before inviting your neighbors over, you’ll want to make sure that your yard is worth showing off. This may mean updating elements like your fence—or adding them if your yard is bare. Tall privacy fences create an intimate setting for enjoying spring and summer afternoons and evenings. 2. Add screens so mosquitos aren’t invited too

Lighting can be effective without being irritating. Outdoor floor lamps with soft colored, low-wattage bulbs cast a warm, inviting glow that won’t make your guests uncomfortable. If your torches use oil as a fuel source, you can load them with a Citronella oil to effectively keep mosquitoes away.
